Tyler and Sara Hansen became the proud new owners of the Oystercatcher in December 2013. The Oystercatcher was started by Susan Vanderbeek in September 1998. Susan sold to Joe Scott and Jamie Sastre nine years later, and six years after that Tyler and Sara enthusiastically took the reins.
In keeping with the long tradition of the Oystercatcher, Chef Tyler strives to cook simply, and to cook simply good food. He began his cooking career as an intern at the age of 15 at Boulder, Colorado restaurants, working his way up from peeling potatoes to becoming a line cook. After moving to Bellingham, Washington Tyler became sous chef at the Chuckanut Manor where Sara was a server. They married in Bellingham in 2008. Tyler then made a name for himself as sous chef at The Ridge restaurant in Lake Tahoe while Sara reported for the local newspaper. In 2011 Tyler became sous chef at Restaurant Kelly Liken in Vail, Colorado (he cooked a dinner for Michelle Obama) and Sara managed the front of the house at the nearby La Tour restaurant.
Tyler has a deep passion for cooking. He strives to make everything in his own kitchen, working with ingredients from local farmers. Sara’s’ skillful management of the restaurant helps create a relaxed and fun experience for everyone who visits the Oystercatcher.
